Holiday Tree of Hope and Support

ornaments on the tree of hope and supportA tradition that began in 2004 at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, the Holiday Tree of Hope and Support is an exhibit that empowers students to share their concerns about sexual assault through the decoration of ornaments with awareness messages, risk reduction strategies, messages of hope for a campus free of sexual violence, and support for victims and survivors of sexual assault. The exhibit has enabled RESPECT peer educators to interact with students with discussion about the myths and realities of sexual assault. In it's first year, 96 ornaments were hung on a single tree. As the project continues to grow, 259 ornaments hung on two trees in 2005. During its most current year, four trees were located about campus with 677 ornaments hung on them. It is planned to further develop this awareness outreach event and to have trees displayed in many buildings across campus as this tradition continues each year.
